Shooting goals, dirty cleats, and victories being made, the soccer season for both boys and girls has started for the school year. Soccer tryouts were held the week after Thanksgiving break. Both teams have new and old players joining again, they're also looking to improve and have a better season this year.

infographics

Info graphics are important to newspaper because they show data but in a way that you can see it in a visual way. It makes it easier to see data since it's right there for you to look at rather than having to read it and try to picture it all in your head. It helps you understand data better.

Graphs, charts, and diagrams are all info graphics, they help you also interpret what a story is trying to say but in an easier and better way. It is also like details shown that weren't included in the story but should be acknowledged. I think they draw you in to a story better too because you want to know why the chart was made and thats what a story tells about.

story from word at home

The journalism room open’s their doors in a new hallway this year. The room that once held yearbook, photojournalism, and newspaper was moved to the AHA hallway and merged in to two classrooms. Mr. Doerr, the yearbook teacher, and Mr. Reeves, the newspaper teacher’s reasoning behind the move was for various reasons.

                “First, we felt it was important to be in the AHA hall way since both Mr. Doerr and I are AHA teachers. It puts us nearer the students we have in class, and is especially helpful for our advisory classes. Second, we needed to be near each other to communicate about equipment, coverage of school events and since we work so closely together, so students could access both of us if necessary.” Reeves said.

                With the new room and changes came financial support from the Career and Technology Education department. The Perkins Grant is a federal grant that has been around for years, it is designed for the federal government to help support career and technology education in the United States which is accessible to CTE teachers. From this grant and their certifications, both Mr. Doerr and Mr. Reeves can receive enough funding for new equipment for the students to use, some of the special equipment the newspaper room has gotten this year are touch screen  computers, both teachers were able to get new cameras, other camera equipment, and a photo printer. “Soon we will be able to offer articulated classes, which means our students can earn credit for ACC class when they take ours. We also hope to begin offering certifications through Adobe in all three major programs, Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. That will really open some doors for any students who want to jump straight into graphic design jobs out in the real world after high school.” Mr. Reeves said.

                Since the move of the rooms, changes have been made to the curricular. In the previous years the photojournalism class has worked with pinhole cameras and a dark room, which is something the students this year will unfortunately not have the chance to use. The new name for the class that was once photojournalism is now called Graphic Design and Illustration for Photojournalism. Journalism is now called Graphic Design and Illustration for Journalism. “We are completely digital now and that will benefit our students in the long run as they should leave our program more prepared to be on staff of a college newspaper, yearbook, news-magazine or enter the work world in graphic design and illustration.”

                Senior, Dara, has been a student of Mr. Reeves in most of the years she’s been at Akins, she is a part of the newspaper staff at school. “It's a lot cooler, it's bigger, it’s very spacious we can move around easily. These computers are amazing, I can easily manage and locate items better and the visual is much more clear and more high def.” Dara said.

                The new yearbook and newspaper rooms have brought many benefits to both the students and teachers and will bring much success despite some of the sacrifices that had to be made.

3. if you had a choice to stay in the old room or this room which would you pick and why?

 the old room was like home because we spent so much time ni there, it was like my mom and so its a hard decision to choose between the rooms the old one has pros and cons the old one is like home we could be ourselves inthere but the cons were its really hot and ccramped the new room the pros ar that its more spacious its good temperature and its sorta like a chill setting but the cons are its not the older room.

what do your art pieces represent about you?

"i guess i love archaeology and architecture thats how it all started i wanted to do something that had a lot of architecture in it something that i could actually build while also creating art so its a combination of sculptures and art"

what makes someone an artist?

 "an artist is someone who can't not make art. i dont think i could go one week without doing it its almost a disease. something i just have to deal with and fit into my life otherwise i wouldnt be full"

what kind of art are presenting at the show?

mostly abstract, figurative colors, shapes

what motivates and inspires you to make art?

"motivators are everything, my wife, shes kinda my agent, my motivator, my biggest fan, without her i probably wouldn't make as much as i do. everything, music, movies, im huge into indie music, anything new, i keep hearing new things"

what are some things you do in your past time when you're not being an art teacher?

"when im not doing art i coach soccer at akins, i like to play soccer on my own, i play in a league, movies, film, old film, just finding new music, probably my biggest passions"

what are some of your favorite artists or art pieces from other people?

"gustav klimt and salvador dali, i can't do what they do so i love them"

what are the challenges of teaching high school students about art?

"it's more difficult to break things down in to steps to me i just understand it and i know how to do most of the things but to actually understand it and break it down to someone who doesn't thats the biggest challenge"

what were you looking forward to the most at this art show?

"mostly to see friends, family, all the people in the show, good friends of mine, getting people to see our art"

is there anything you have to say to any aspiring artists?

"try something different try something you're not sure of and afraid of, i try to do things im not too sure of and those are usually whats a little more exciting"

if you weren't teaching art what is another career path you'd go for?

"if i wasnt teaching art, its hard to imagine, i started off wanting to be a teacher, i started off being a studio artist, wanting to be an artist, now that im teaching i cant really imagine doing anything else but if I had to, i'd probably be in the music business, a journalist, or i'd probably be in a basement blogging about music"

have you had any experience before with art shows? are you expecting people to buy your art work at this show?
 "minimal, first actual big show for me" other art pieces at kerbey lane on the drag, it's kind of a big month, some of his art work is at school

"haven't sold any yet, i've sold a few to friends" illustrations on his website, he's sold about 5 of those

how would you describe your high-school self?

"relate really well to students, im hoping that ill always relate to the kids, i like most of the things they like, i have that youthful energy"

story sequence notes

1. pick your story
2. brainstorm who you'd want to interview for that story, always need to interview students keep minimum number of adults, think outside the box
3. come up with a set of questions, dont come up with questions that are answered with "yes" and "no" do open ended questions, write 2 or 3 sets of questions, have conversation, if they give you an opening answer conversant
4. go to editor and discuss with editor what expectations are of the story, find out what they're expecting in terms of length, the average story is about half to a quarter of a page on Microsoft word.
5. come up with an outline: what it's about, where you'd like to see it go. Quote- Transition tell a story, more story telling
6. do quote transition style before doing lead, do middle of story first then do the lead
7. write your lead, first 5 words should make you want to read the story
8. finish the story, DON'T MISS DEADLINES

     I like the newspaper from Bridgewater, New Jersey because it's more pictures on the front cover, I like how there are only a couple stories on the front, because if there are only a couple, and are interesting, it makes you want to open the newspaper and read more. I also like that the pictures on the cover are not just pictures that look like they were carelessly taken.
     I like the one from Washington, again because of the pictures taking up most of the cover of it. I think just stories and no pictures on any cover would not look as interesting to pick up and read. I like the small previews of stories on the side, they give you a little information that would want to make you open the newspaper up and find the story to read.
